Deer sees hawk swoop down into field to grab bunny and comes to its rescue

I’ve been around deer my whole life and I’ve never seen an encounter like this. That doe didn’t waste a second.

In Wisconsin’s Nordic Mountain Country Park, a majestic hawk is captured on security camera footage as it descends upon a rabbit, followed by the harrowing sound of its unfortunate prey’s cry of distress.

Suddenly, a deer emerged from the surroundings and courageously charged towards the hawk, using its hooves to kick the predator and creating an opportunity for the rabbit to escape.

It all happened so fast.

Following the initial confrontation, the bird is subsequently subjected to repeated trampling and biting by the deer lasting up to three minutes until it succumbs.

The deer didn’t hold back at all.

Kris Miller, a 29-year-old operations manager, found the video on June 11.

Upon the discovery of a deceased red-tailed hawk in close proximity during his tree-cutting tasks, he opted to review the footage captured by the nearby camera.

He was dead curious about what happened.

Kris observed that the rabbit began emitting a distress signal, which led the deer to potentially confuse it with the distress call of her own fawn.

Alternatively, it could be likened to a genuine Bambi and Thumper narrative. Furthermore, he noted that such an occurrence was unprecedented in his experience.

Upon making the decision to personally investigate the circumstances surrounding the hawk’s situation, he was not anticipating witnessing the entirety of the event firsthand.

It surprised him.

He reminisced, pondering the unusual sight before him. The realization struck that hawks rarely meet such fate without a reason. Curiously, his gaze landed on a security camera nearby, sparking a glimmer of hope to unveil the truth behind the mysterious incident that had transpired.

“I played back the footage on my phone and what I found was astonishing,” he shared. “I showed it to my co-worker and he didn’t know what to say.”

It doesn’t happen every day.

As the county park prohibits hunting activities on its premises, the area has become a sanctuary for many white-tailed deer, who seek refuge and safety within the park’s boundaries.

In the video, one can observe the red-tailed hawk either exerting itself to grasp the rabbit or swooping down to seize it, thereby enabling the deer to successfully rescue the rabbit.

The doe didn’t waste a second.

The video quickly gained widespread attention, amassing millions of views and being shared thousands of times. Additionally, thousands of comments have been shared in response to the video’s popularity.

“For more than two decades, our property has been frequented by deer, casually loitering and passing through. This behavior, as described by one observer, is unprecedented in their experience. The sight of such a display was deemed remarkable.”

“This particular occurrence is of such extraordinary nature that the mere act of recounting it verbally to another individual may result in skepticism on their part due to its exceptional nature. The fact that this event was captured on video serves as remarkable evidence of its reality,” expressed another individual.

Truly, this stands out as one of the most remarkable rescue missions to date!
