The animal ran away from its steady in Killorglin, Co Kerry, on Saturday evening after bad weather harmed the gate.
The donkey was found stranded in a field the following early morning, surrounded by deep flood water, after a river overflowed its banks close by.
Mike Fleming, a member of Killorglin Rowing Club, found out and with a team of rescuers from the animal sanctuary, managed to get a rope and buoyancy help around the donkey before drawing him to land.
A spokeswoman for Animal Heaven Animal Rescue claimed the donkey, which has been called Mike after his rescuer, is recovering at the animal shelter while his stable is fixed.
Suzanne Gibbons, founder of the shelter, claimed: He is currently dried out with towels, eating a warm mash, all cosy and cozy and our vet has seen him and started him on anti-biotics to stop pneumonia.
He has a small bit of liquid in one lung but our vet said he will recover.
Thanks a lot for anybody that helps animals in need.
Love the Donkeys. He is truly smiling …
